Minimum Education Requirement: Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from a school or college of optometry in the United States or Canada accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) and a current therapeutic license to practice optometry in a state or territory of the United States or District of Columbia

Air Force pilots need excellent vision and thus excellent eye care. However, the majority of Airmen don’t fly, and yet they need excellent eye care just the same. As an Air Force Optometrist, you’ll care for the vision of Airmen and their families in an environment free from the red tape of running a practice. Whether you’re administering a simple eye exam or helping a patient overcome an injury, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of everyone you treat.

Career Tasks

  • Ensure proper vision correction with glasses or contact lenses, as well as diagnose, treat and manage ocular disease and provide surgical comanagement
  • Opportunities to pursue physiological optics research, further supporting the Air Force air and space mission
