Health Facilities Architect/Engineer
Minimum Education Requirement: Architects and Engineers in the Health Facilities Division are commissioned officers in the Air Force Biomedical Sciences Corps. To be considered, you must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture or engineering from an accredited university. No prior experience required. The Health Facilities Division will provide extensive on-the-job training in the field of healthcare planning, design and construction.
Healthcare Professional
From Biloxi, Mississippi, to Ramstein, Germany, from Level 1 hospitals to simple clinics, the Air Force operates more than 80 health facilities around the world. As a Health Facilities Architect or Engineer, you’ll work to ensure our Airmen around the world have access to the healthcare they need. In fact, you’ll have a hand in everything from design and construction to developing facility master plans and life cycle management.
Career Tasks
- Represent the Air Force surgeon general in all matters concerning the planning, programming, design and construction of Air Force medical facilities
- Provide architectural and engineering consultative services to Air Force medical facilities worldwide
- Coordinate in medical facility site selection and planning processes
- Develop concept plans and programming documents using Department of Defense space-planning criteria
- Participate in the architectural/engineering (A/E) firm and contractors technical evaluation selection process
- Perform functional and technical reviews of development documents and drawings
- Identify requirements for medical equipment and furnishings
- Direct acceptance inspections and construction surveillance
- Assist in transitional planning, initial outfitting and post-occupancy efforts
- Advise on medical facility master planning and life cycle management
- Conduct facility assessment studies to improve the functional use of existing space
- Perform engineering evaluations of building systems and components
- Provide consultant services for code interpretation and compliance
- Identify facility sustainment, restoration and modernization requirements and advocate for project funding
